Etiometry Highlights New Study Linking Pre-ECMO IDO2 Trends to Neurologic Outcomes in Infants

BOSTON, Mass. – June 2, 2026 – Etiometry, a leader in AI-driven clinical intelligence, today announced new research published in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine demonstrating that impaired oxygen delivery analytics in the hours leading up to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) were associated with mortality and adverse neurologic outcomes in infants. 

This single-center retrospective cohort study of infants supported on ECMO evaluated the relationship between Etiometry’s inadequate delivery of oxygen index (IDO2) and outcomes in infants requiring ECMO support. Investigators found that higher IDO2 burden in the hours immediately preceding ECMO initiation correlated with worse neurologic and functional outcomes, including electroencephalography abnormalities, abnormal neuroimaging, and mortality. 

The findings add to observational evidence that pre-ECMO physiologic risk trends may be associated with subsequent outcomes and may support further research into clinician review of patient trajectory. The authors noted that elevated IDO2 exposure was associated with worse outcomes in this retrospective infant cohort, supporting future research into how adjunctive oxygen-delivery metrics may inform clinician review.

“This work highlights the importance of understanding a patient’s physiologic trajectory before ECMO,” said Ahmed S. Said, MD, PhD, senior author of the study and pediatric intensivist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “Continuous risk analytics such as IDO2 may provide adjunctive information about oxygen-delivery trends for clinician review. Further research is needed to evaluate how these tools may support decision-making in critically ill patients before irreversible neurologic injury occurs. Our goal is to continue investigating how these tools can support clinical review and care-team communication in critically ill patients.”
